At night, blue chalk circles appear on the pavements of Paris. And each time, a small object, clearly scavenged from a junkyard, graces the center of the circle: a broken lighter, a piece of wire, a doll's head. No one pays any attention to it except Inspector Adamsberg, who doesn't consider these circles a harmless prank. And one morning, instead of a trivial object, a dead body is found within the blue circle.

"The Man Who Draws Blue Circles" (1991) is the first book by the celebrated Fred Vargas, featuring the legendary Inspector Adamsberg. Crime novels featuring this "head-in-the-clouds" genius brought Vargas worldwide fame. They have been translated into almost 40 languages and have received numerous awards from various countries: five 813 Trophies, the legendary Inkblood, the Elle Magazine Readers' Grand Prix, three British Duncan Laurie Daggers, and the prestigious Princess of Asturias Prize, nicknamed the "Spanish Nobel."
