This multifaceted work by L. V. It explores the reign of one of Russia's most ambitious and extraordinary rulers. Emperor Nicholas Pavlovich reveals his complex personality in all its contradictory depths. "Tamer of Revolutions," "Gendarme of Europe," "Nikolai Palkin"—these were the nicknames his detractors used to stigmatize the autocrat. Nicholas I himself proudly called himself a conservative sovereign. Contrary to popular belief, this monarch was by no means an enemy of change: he clearly saw Russia's fundamental problems and sought solutions.
Volume I of the duology provides a detailed account of Nicholas Pavlovich's grand ducal period, the tragic events of the interregnum, internal transformations against the backdrop of socioeconomic development, shifting approaches to the national question, and key ideologies of state power. This edition draws on new publications and archival documents on the topic, particularly chamber journals. Historiographical notes are provided for each chapter and section, taking into account the publication of new literature.
Volume II of the duology analyzes the scientific and cultural policies characteristic of enlightened absolutism, the psychological portrait of the crowned head in his family life, and the successes and failures of imperial diplomacy that led Russia to the Crimean War with the new European coalition. At the height of the international conflict, Nicholas I died suddenly in the Small Study of the Winter Palace on February 18, 1855. Due to numerous rumors about his death, this story is examined in greater detail. This edition contains an annotated index of names and an index of geographical and administrative names.
