Mary Webb was an English writer and poet of the early 20th century, a "forgotten genius" whose work was largely unknown in Russia for many years. Webb (née Meredith) was born in Leyton, a small village in Shropshire. Her mother, Alice, was descended from the family of Sir Walter Scott, the famous Scottish writer. Mary was the eldest of six children. When she was 14, her mother became seriously ill, leaving Mary to care for her younger siblings. Her father, a village schoolteacher, instilled in his daughter a passion for literature and a love of the local countryside from an early age, which permeates all of her subsequent work.

"The Golden Curse" (1924) is one of Mary Webb's most successful works. In 1926, the book won the French Prix Femina for best foreign novel (English writers such as Edward Forster and Virginia Woolf were also nominated for the prize over the years). The novel, like Webb's other works, is set against the poetic backdrop of Shropshire and transports readers to the early 19th century. It is a bright and touching story of a girl marked by fate, for whom her "curse" becomes a source of inner strength and, through pain and suffering, helps her find love.
