The Snake is the Swedish writer’s debut novel about the unbearable anticipation of the unknown in a wartime environment.

The action takes place in Sweden, which remained neutral during the Second World War. Eight soldiers tell each other stories as they try to escape fear-induced insomnia.
Mixing the metaphorical and the literal, Dagerman explores the nature of despair and creates a narrative of anxiety-absorbed souls, inflamed consciousness, and bodily uncaused terror. Fear, individual and collective, cannot be specified. It is centered in the through image of the snake, a symbol that unites the heroes of the novel in anticipation of the inevitable.
