Traveling salesman Grigory Stasko was murdered in a rooming house in the Moscow region town of Dmitrov. He died from a blow to the temple with a knuckle duster, and the room was locked from the inside, with the windows closed. Upon arrival, the guest had two baskets of expensive pocket watches and a substantial sum of money, which later disappeared. The case is assigned to investigating magistrate Ivan Fedorovich Volovtsov. A suspect is Katz, a woman who had previously threatened to kill Stasko for her husband's injustice. Furthermore, her brother managed to pay off a nearby brothel with watches from the murdered traveling salesman's luggage. The crime scene seems clear... But Volovtsov is plagued by doubts. And not surprisingly: a new suspect suddenly appears in the case...
