Death doesn't seek open doors...
Traveling salesman Grigory Stasko was murdered in a rooming house in the Moscow region town of Dmitrov. He died from a blow to the temple with a knuckle duster, and the room was locked from the inside, with the windows closed. Upon arrival, the guest had two baskets of expensive pocket watches and a substantial sum of money, which later disappeared. The case is assigned to investigating magistrate Ivan Fedorovich Volovtsov. A suspect is Katz, a woman who had previously threatened to kill Stasko for her husband's injustice. Furthermore, her brother managed to pay off a nearby brothel with watches from the murdered traveling salesman's luggage. The crime scene seems clear... But Volovtsov is plagued by doubts. And not surprisingly: a new suspect suddenly appears in the case...
A historical detective story about a crime from the early 20th century. The author so captivatingly immerses us in the atmosphere of that time that we literally hear the rumble of the pavement, the noise of the city market, the ringing of bells and the shrill whistles of the policemen...
