Meredith and Nina Whitson are sisters, but it would be hard to imagine women more different. One is a homebody, always believing there was no better destiny than getting married, raising children, and running the family apple orchard. The other dreamed of travel, became a photojournalist covering humanitarian disasters, and travels the world, avoiding conversations about the future and family.

The sisters' father's illness brings them together in their parents' home. From their mother, who has Russian roots, they have never known anything but icy disapproval, and even now Anya makes no attempt to bond with her daughters, displaying the aloofness they are all too familiar with. As children, the only thing they had in common was the bedtime story about a poor girl and a prince that their mother told the girls. Realizing he is dying, the father asks his daughters to listen to the story until the very end. Thus begins the journey of two women into their mother’s past, into her life in besieged Leningrad, into a terrible and beautiful icy world.
