Abdulmadzhid grew up in a Dagestani village where no one had an exact address - the residents' passports simply stated "village N". One day, a blonde girl named Asya came there for the summer, and for the next few weeks, the boy and girl were harassing the entire neighborhood with their pranks. Asya couldn't pronounce the name of her new friend and asked what his name was "in Russian". That's how Abdulmadzhid became Ivan. One day, the children's pranks got out of control: Abdulmadzhid and Asya took the mute son of a bricklayer, Musa, to the mountains, and the boy got lost there. Everything worked out, but this event had an amazing effect on Abdulmadzhid's self-perception: a sense of guilt and a thirst for redemption revealed something new in him.
Time passed, Abdulmadzhid left his native village, entered a Moscow university, and there for the first time encountered what it meant to be different from everyone else. “Ivan,” he continued to introduce himself, simultaneously wanting to blend in with those around him and burning with shame for betraying himself. Abdulmajid became a writer; he populated the stories of his debut book with characters – people he had once met back home in the Caucasus. They are reflected in him, and he in them; alien voices helped Abdulmajid find his own. “The Life of Not-Ivan” is a story about the search for identity and calling, about what it is like to be an outsider, alone in a big city, and about the power of roots.
