Mark Konstantinovich Azadovsky (1888–1954) was a folklorist, literary historian, bibliographer, and one of the leading humanities scholars in Russia in the 20th century. His main work, The History of Russian Folklore Studies, his works on Decembrist studies, and his articles and essays on Siberian culture have long been firmly established in the golden fund of Russian science. The book, based on numerous documents (archival and printed), traces his life path, from his childhood in Eastern Siberia to his last days in Leningrad. Particular attention is paid to the scientist’s numerous plans and undertakings, which he was unable to implement for various reasons. Individual chapters tell about the dramatic events of the era of "late Stalinism": reprimands at meetings and defamation in the press, dismissal from Leningrad University and the Pushkin House, suspension from studying Russian folklore and the scholar's persistent struggle to rehabilitate his name.

The author of the book, Konstantin Azadovsky, is a literary historian, Germanist and translator, the son of Mark Azadovsky.
