Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus (ca. 70 AD - after 122 AD) was an ancient Roman writer and historian, personal secretary to Emperor Hadrian. The most famous work of Suetonius - a collection of biographies "Life of the Twelve Caesars", in which the author describes the appearance, habits, details of personal life of the most famous rulers of Rome. It is this book that contains famous stories related to Roman emperors (Caligula's horse, Nero's acting exercises, Vespasian's words "money does not smell", Titus' words "friends, I lost a day" and others). The book immediately became popular and remains so to this day. The information gathered by Suetonius is often quoted, his descriptions of the emperors served as a basis for the works of many other authors, and in the modern world are used in movie scripts about the life of ancient Rome. This edition contains a large number of illustrations, making the book particularly spectacular.
