The plot centers on Chicago librarian Henry DeTemble, who suffers from a rare genetic disorder and involuntarily travels through time. His life is intertwined with that of Claire Abshire, an artist who creates paper sculptures. She meets him at different points in her life: childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. For her, their relationship is, from the very beginning, linked not only to love but also to the constant anticipation of sudden disappearances and returns. The novel combines romance with the sci-fi premise of time travel. Within, it is a story about marriage, trust, the loss of a sense of stability, and the attempt to maintain intimacy when the future and past constantly interfere with the present.
