In 2020, in our April Fool's joke collection, we came up with the idea for a book called "The Art of Swearing." The joke proved so compelling that readers started writing to ask when the book would be published. The interest never abated, and we decided: we had to publish it!

How did Russian swearing permeate literature—from classical to contemporary? Why are some curse words taboo, while others become euphemisms? How is obscene language changing under the influence of laws and the internet? And why, despite all the prohibitions, is Russian without swearing no longer truly Russian?
