"The Reserve" is a story based on Dovlatov's personal experience. It looks like a series of anecdotal stories, but at the center of its plot is the painful personal crisis of a "superfluous man." The main character, an unrecognized writer Boris Alikhanov, gets a summer job at the A.S. Pushkin Museum-Reserve "Mikhailovskoye" in the Pskov Region, but instead of the inspiring world of Russian classics, he finds a miserable semblance of theatrical scenery, in which there is not a single authentic object. Here, museum workers, talking about Pushkin, speak in cliched phrases like "a great poet and citizen," instead of a lively narrative about his work. Feeling the artificiality surrounding him, Alikhanov, with his characteristic self-irony, discusses his own purpose and caustically reviews the state of Soviet literature and reality in general...
