To date, several hundred diaries of the residents of besieged Leningrad are known. But despite the commonality of time, place and horrific circumstances that gave birth to this unique collective text of the besieged city, each of them strikes us in a special way. Behind the lines of each is the story of an individual's encounter with a catastrophe of historic proportions, a catastrophe that stretched over years and was recorded in detail by eyewitnesses in real time. "Pages of memoirs, letters, documents sometimes resemble pages of the Apocalypse, create an image of the city as an all-consuming grave, in the insatiable womb of which hundreds of thousands of children, women, men disappeared..." The more striking and truly life-affirming are those diary entries, behind which, despite the horror of the blockade everyday life, clearly visible unbroken whole personality. Such are the diaries of Irina Dmitrievna Zelenskaya and sisters Vera Konstantinovna Berkhman and Tatiana Konstantinovna Velikotnaya published in this book. Personal diaries are a special kind of literature: with some exceptions, the outside reader is admitted to these texts by chance. But the value of siege diaries is unique and enduring: in those terrible days they served as an outlet for their authors, in our days they provide non-fictional examples of life resilience, confirming the idea that even in inhuman conditions it is possible to remain human.
