Ekaterina Romanovna Dashkova, née Vorontsova (1743-1810), was one of the most famous Russian women of the 18th century. A friend of Catherine the Great and the head of two academies, the princess left a lasting mark on both culture and politics. She participated in a palace coup in favor of her royal friend, traveled extensively throughout Western Europe, and became acquainted with renowned minds of her time—Denis Diderot, Benjamin Franklin, and Adam Smith. Finally, she wrote her memoirs, the famous "Notes."

The "Notes" contain valuable information about the reign of Peter III, the accession of Catherine II and Dashkova's role in the coup, the intrigue-filled court life, details of the princess's ten-year wanderings across Europe, sketches of Moscow life in the mid-18th century, and profiles of famous Russian and European figures with whom the author encountered fate.
