One of Dostoevsky's most poignant books is about life in a penal servitude prison, freedom, and the human capacity to preserve oneself under any circumstances.

The four years Dostoevsky spent in penal servitude formed the basis for one of the most unusual books in Russian literature. "Notes from the House of the Dead," published in 1860–1862, revealed for the first time the dark side of a Siberian prison and marked the beginning of Russian prison camp prose.

A nobleman, Alexander Goryanchikov, convicted of murdering his wife, finds himself among convicts whom society has long since ceased to consider human. Day after day, he observes their cruelty and compassion, despair and hope, trying to understand whether it is possible to preserve a living soul in the House of the Dead.
