Academician M. L. Gasparov (1935–2005) was a leading Russian philologist, literary scholar, and translator. He was a laureate of the Russian State Prize (1995), the Pushkin Prize of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and several other awards. He authored numerous works on classical literature, poetics, and versification, widely known both in Russia and abroad. His book, "Entertaining Greece: Stories about Ancient Greek Culture," enjoyed great success and has been reprinted numerous times.

This book is his only non-scholarly work. It is a bizarre fusion of memoirs, diary entries, letters, journalistic articles, and recollections of her teachers, friends, and colleagues: the legendary classicist S. I. Sobolevsky, F. A. Petrovsky and M. E. Grabar-Passek, writers S. P. Bobrov and K. Chukovsky, academician S. S. Averintsev, poet I. Brodsky, and other remarkable people—outstanding representatives of 20th-century Russian culture.
