In November 1999, Joan Didion began seeing a psychiatrist because, as she wrote to a friend, "the last few years have been difficult for her family." She kept a diary for her husband, John Gregory Dunne, detailing her conversations with the therapist. They discussed depression, anxiety, guilt, and the complex relationship with her daughter, Quintana. Didion also experienced increasingly frequent, prolonged periods of inability to work. They also discussed her childhood—the misunderstandings, the lack of contact with her mother and father, the early sense of impending disaster. These journals are a surprisingly honest account, revealing sides of Didion that no one else had ever seen. Yet, we are certainly presented with a Didion tormented by questions, yet determined to embark on such a painful journey.
