The first volume of the diaries of the American writer and essayist Susan Sontag (1933-2004), prepared for publication by her son David Riff, covers years of study at the University of California at Berkeley, further admission to the University of Chicago, acquaintance with sociologist Philip Riff and the birth of a son. A testament to both the intellectual and sensual development of America’s largest public intellectual, the diary contains lists of youthful reading, movies watched and many notes dedicated to favorite authors – Andre Gide and Thomas Mann, the last sixteen-year-old Susan visited in his California mansion, spending the whole day in a meaningful conversation. The diary also includes entries made in the year Sontag spent in Paris.
