English philologist and literary critic George Saintsbury (1845–1933) became famous for his book on spirits. Notes from the Wine Cellar (1920) - a description of the collection he collected and an encyclopedia of alcohol available in the UK in the second half of the nineteenth century. Saintsbury tells in detail about the advantages and disadvantages, traditions of use, peculiarities of preparation and storage of sherry and Madeira, port and whiskey, claret and champagne, Burgundy, Rhine and Moselle wines, ciders, beer, etc. As a true gourmet and literary critic, Saintsbury not only compares drinks with each other, but also gives references to them in the world literature. The love of good books and the predilection for good wine, according to the author, complement each other and are the qualities that distinguish a true gentleman.
