The novel's hero believes he's been deprived by fate and deserves more in life than he has. Enchanted by this idea, he begins stealing from the jewelry factory where he works as a gemsetter, setting precious stones and gold. He convinces himself that stealing from the rich isn't a sin, and dreams of saving enough money to move from his provincial town to St. Petersburg with his girlfriend. However, having embarked on a life of crime, he gradually loses everything: his brother dies, his friends become distant, he loses contact with his parents, his girlfriend becomes a boy, and ultimately, the hero loses his identity, transforming from a cheerful young man into an autistic "stingy knight." Ultimately, he dies in poverty, and his savings remain unspent.
