The book is devoted to the history of British diplomat Robert Bruce Lockart (1887-1970), who in 1918 was involved in the so-called "Three Ambassadors Plot". According to the official Soviet version, on the basis of which Lockhart and some other foreign diplomats and citizens were expelled from Soviet Russia, the conspiracy was intended to organize a coup and overthrow the Bolsheviks, as well as to continue the war against Germany on the Eastern Front. Researchers have often argued that this threat was exaggerated and became only a justification for the unfolding Red terror. According to the author of this lively yet deeply researched book, the threat to overthrow Soviet power was real. Jonathan Schnier is an American historian living in Britain, a visiting professor at Oxford University, and a retired emeritus professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
