M.D. Bonch-Bruyevich was a well-known military figure, general of the tsarist and Soviet armies. During World War I he held a number of top staff positions and was one of the heads of Russian military counterintelligence. After the October Revolution of 1917, he became the first general to serve the Soviet government, initiated the creation of "veil" units from the most combat-ready units of the old army. He was the military head of the Supreme Military Council, and from the summer of 1919 headed the Field Headquarters of the Republic. In these positions he actively recruited former officers and generals of the Russian Imperial Army to serve in the Red Army. In his memoirs, the author not only tells about these events, but also gives interesting (though often subjective) characterizations of his famous contemporaries.
