Sergei Parkhomenko was a political reporter and columnist in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the founder and editor-in-chief of the legendary magazine Itogi, then a book publisher, editor-in-chief of Vokrug Sveta, and host of the weekly program "The Essence of Events" on Ekho Moskvy radio.
But he has one particular passion: in the early 2000s, he also became known as a popular blogger nicknamed "cook," and more recently, he launched a podcast about gastronomic history, "The Essence of Food." For two decades, he wrote essays in which he recounted stories of his own encounters and travels, describing observations, impressions, and moods brought back from distant lands, and published them in various magazines under the guise of gastronomic columns. Precisely: each essay describes some wonderful meal, even includes a clear and precise recipe, along with a carefully selected list of ingredients, so anyone can even prepare it. But in reality, these essays are about the lives of the people around them, about the questions people ask each other while they're alive, and about the answers life sometimes offers them quite unexpectedly.
