Finally, he left the imperial court and returned home to Cappadocia! The Constantinople court physician, Caesarius, is a black sheep in his pious provincial family, a disgrace to his father, the bishop, and a bitter reason for the admonitions of his brother, Gregory the Theologian. But his loved ones don't know that this is no simple visit, but an exile, to which Emperor Julian, an enemy of Christians, has commuted Caesarius's execution. Only his faithful friend, the physician Callistus, a pagan, supports and accompanies Caesarius. A meeting awaits the disgraced physician in his homeland that reopens the wound of his youth: Macrina, who is preparing to become a Christian deaconess, lives there. A quarrel immediately erupts between Caesarius and his father, the bishop, and Callistus suffers the most, rushing to separate them. Meanwhile, the freedman Theotimus rules over Gregory the Elder's estate. He wants to seize control of it and turns the father against his sons, taking advantage of the contemplative Gregory's mismanagement and the lack of rights for Salom, the master's son by a slave. Caesarius has been close since childhood with his slave brother, a talented groom and hippiatrist, and wants to make him a free man. The conflict between Caesarius and his father takes place against the backdrop of the Arian heresy, which is tearing the Church apart, regarding the inequality of the Father and the Son in the Trinity.

The author is a medical historian, which makes the work even more captivating.

The second novel in the "Physician of Bithynia" series continues the plotline of the first part about the adventures of Caesarius and Callistus, "The Vestal Virgin's Son," but it can be read without familiarity with the beginning of the characters' story.
