The memoirs of Bernhard von Bülow (1849–1929), a German statesman and diplomat from a Prussian aristocratic family, cover the period from 1897 to 1903—from his assumption of the post of State Secretary of the Foreign Office to his appointment as Reich Chancellor and Minister-President of Prussia. Von Bülow's documentary prose is distinguished by its impeccable literary style and a high level of authenticity in its depiction of the socially significant events of the time, as well as its unusually accurate characterizations of politicians and heads of state with whom the author knew personally. Of particular interest are the portraits of Kaiser Wilhelm II, Queen Victoria of England, and Emperor Nicholas II and his wife, Alexandra Feodorovna. Along with descriptions of negotiations, diplomatic intrigues, and military conflicts, the book contains humorous and graceful sketches from everyday life and curious observations made during business trips to Russia, Europe, the Middle East, Syria, and Palestine.
