Sergey Nikolaevich Chekin (1897-1970), a peasant, an anarchist by convictions, who graduated from the medical faculty of Samara University, was repressed in 1940 and spent ten years in a camp. After his release, he worked as a doctor, and in 1963-1969 he wrote several memoirs in which he described the Starobuyan Republic that existed in his native village in 1905, his participation in World War I, his studies in post-revolutionary Samara and his work as a rural and urban doctor, his trial and camp experience, and the Pechora camp uprising. Telling about the tragic turns of one private destiny, S. N. Chekin's memoirs at the same time serve as a valuable source on the history of peasant intelligentsia and Russian anarchism, as well as on local history. The memoirs were prepared for printing by the author's grandson, historian L. S. Chekin.
