Lev Filippovich Volkenstein (1857–1935) was a Rostov lawyer in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, educated first at the Taganrog Gymnasium (where he studied with A.P. Chekhov) and then at the law faculty of St. Petersburg University. Ironically describing himself as a "provincial," the memoirist describes in detail the daily life and legal practices in Rostov at that time, devoting particular attention to the colorful criminal and civil cases he handled. The issue of Jewish identity occupies a prominent place in his memoirs. The memoirs recount the events of the 1917 Revolution and the Civil War, as well as the author's stay in Kislovodsk in 1918, when the city was occupied alternately by the Reds and Whites. In 1921, L. F. Volkenstein fled Soviet Russia; his memoirs briefly describe his experiences in exile. The appendix contains L. F. Volkenstein’s memoirs about A. P. Chekhov and his letters addressed to the writer.
