Robert Hamilton Bruce Lockhart served as British Consul General in Moscow and, from January to September 1918, headed the British mission to the Soviet government. The young ambassador's energetic activity, his consistent belief in the principles of democracy, and his ability to fight for his ideals and cultivate friendship attracted supporters of opposing sides. In his book, he left behind excellent political portraits of Trotsky, Lenin, and Dzerzhinsky, with particularly vivid pages devoted to the enormous catastrophe that befell Russia. His book became a classic in the genre of literary journalism, and to this day it amazes with its freshness, boldness of thought, and insight.
