From February 1943, the war began to tilt against the Third Reich. Germany's manpower was dwindling, and in September 1944, Hitler decreed the creation of the Volkssturm—the people's army—as a last resort for the doomed. Despite his previous status as a key figure in the home front, Hans Thiel was conscripted into the Volkssturm. The soldiers of these units were expected to defend only their home regions, but many, including the author of these memoirs, became bogged down on the Eastern Front. Thiel's military career was short, but he experienced the full force of a soldier's life: brutal battles in Pomerania and East Prussia, the chaos of the disastrous refugee evacuation and rescue operations, and a hatred for the criminally irresponsible Nazi propaganda. Hans Thiel feared Russian captivity most of all, but he fell into the hands of the Polish authorities and experienced firsthand all the hardships of existence as a camp prisoner.
