The Red Army could not have won the Civil War of 1917–1922 without the tens of thousands of former officers who served in its ranks. Moreover, the mere mention of the word "officer" in early 1918 in Soviet Russia could have led to summary execution. Therefore, former officers who joined the new army of the "world's first workers' and peasants' state" became known as military specialists, or military specialists for short.

Everyone had to make difficult choices during the Civil War. Some played a prominent role in creating and strengthening the Red Army in positions of responsibility. Others paid tribute to the era, emulating the revolutionaries, disregarding everything and everyone. Still others emerged as heroes. Among the military specialists were victims, defectors, and conscious enemies of Soviet power—active members of the White underground.

A new study by Doctor of Historical Sciences A.V. Ganin examines the lives and difficult fates of military specialists. The work draws on documents from thirty archives in Russia and abroad. The book is intended for anyone interested in the military and political history of Russia and neighboring countries during the revolutionary era.
