The book is dedicated to the history of the domestic military uniform during the reign of Emperor Alexander III. For a long time, this era attracted almost no attention from researchers and has remained extremely poorly studied to this day. Meanwhile, the reforms of the peacemaker tsar in the area of military uniform, as often happens, became only part of much larger-scale transformations that affected almost all areas of the state's defense policy. The significance of the events of the 1880s - 1890s for the evolution of the Russian armed forces, as they say, cannot be overestimated. Issues of global strategy and tactics were revised, the organization and composition of troops were significantly changed, new progressive models of weapons and equipment were adopted, without which it is impossible to imagine the Russian army not only at the end of the 19th century, but also in the following decades. All these changes were reflected to one degree or another in the military uniform, which the author tried to reflect in this book. In the last years of the 19th century and at the very beginning of the 20th century, the domestic military machine did not undergo any fundamental changes and until 1904 it moved due to the impetus given to it under Alexander III. Therefore, the military uniform of the first years of the reign of Emperor Nicholas II is described in this same book.

In accordance with the already established practice, this volume of the book tells about the changes in uniforms that affected all or the vast majority of troops. In addition, it includes information about the uniforms and insignia of ranks of military court ranks, generals, the General Staff, the War Ministry, the Guards infantry, cavalry and artillery. The second volume will be devoted to the description of the uniform of army troops (including reserves), military medical and civilian ranks of the military department, as well as a number of auxiliary ranks, units and formations. In a separate third volume, due to the large amount of information, data on the equipment and weapons of troops, horse harnesses, as well as the rules for wearing uniforms, awards and insignia will be compiled. A common list of sources for all volumes will be added to the third volume, as well as a number of appendices to the entire book.

When writing the book, documents from the collections of federal archives, regulatory acts and official literature published by the military department were widely used. Archival materials, iconographic sources and photographs of authentic items from the late 19th - early 20th centuries from domestic and foreign museums and private collections were used as illustrations. A significant part of the information used in the book is published for the first time.
The book is intended for a wide range of readers: military historians, theater and film artists, museum workers, military-historical reenactors and anyone interested in the history of the domestic military uniform.
