Viktor Stepanovich Chernomyrdin is one of the most colorful characters in Russian history at the turn of the century. Back in the early days of the Soviet Union, he achieved a radical transformation of the gas industry. During the difficult period of socio-economic reforms under Boris Yeltsin, he headed the government for more than five years. However, Chernomyrdin's figure was overshadowed by such reformers as Yegor Gaidar and Anatoly Chubais and the team of young economists that came with them. Today, armed with knowledge of the modern vector of the country's development, we are able to give a more objective characterization of V. Chernomyrdin's place and role in the events of that era. The author, in addition to a significant number of printed publications about this time, used the currently available historical and archival materials and numerous conversations with V. Chernomyrdin's closest associates, those who were in the thick of the events. V. Chernomyrdin, among other things, was distinguished by an outstanding sense of humor, as exemplified by his well-known aphorisms. His inner circle gave the publisher the opportunity to see the "cabbage" congratulations on his 60th birthday, which was prepared three days before his resignation.
