For the first time in Russian published "Bithynian speeches" - the central corpus of works of the largest Greek orator and sophist I century AD Dion Chrysostomus. These amazing beauty, graceful and at the same time stylistically rigorous texts - the pinnacle of the creative path of one of the greatest orators of the ancient world, rightfully nicknamed Chrysostom. They are also interesting because they closely familiarize us with the life of the Greek population of the eastern part of the Roman Empire - its manners, customs and orders, being along with the works of Plutarch, Lucian, Athenaeus and other famous Greek writers valuable historical and cultural evidence of the late antiquity.
The accompanying article by S.I. Mezheritskaya, which contains a detailed overview of the biography and works of the orator, as well as the history of their later study and reception, taking into account all the most important classical and modern works of Western European and domestic scholars devoted to Dion Chrysostomus, allows us to immerse ourselves in the world depicted in the speeches.
In addition, the edition is equipped with an extensive reference and bibliographic apparatus: detailed historical and philological commentaries, an annotated index, and an album of illustrations, allowing the reader to get a clearer picture of the ancient realities described in the speeches.
Earlier S. I. Mezheritskaya prepared for the series "Literary Monuments" two volumes of Elias Aristides: "Sacred Speeches. Praise of Rome" and "Eulogies. Monodia."
Recommended for a wide range of readers.
