N. V. Gogol's nonfiction collection, Selected Passages from Correspondence with Friends, seemed to mark the final period of the writer's life, perhaps because it begins with a will. Published by the author, certainly not uncensored, in 1847, the book immediately sparked a public response—it was discussed, criticized, and evaluated. A sermon and a confession, or perhaps even a sanctimonious lament? Literary and artistic criticism, topical correspondence with various famous and unknown figures? Whatever one might characterize the collection, one thing was clear: this was a different Gogol.

The publication opens with an introduction by Daniil Ryasov, PhD in Philology and senior researcher at the Moscow Gogol House.
