Vienna, 1938. Shortly after the Night of Broken Glass, six-year-old violinist Samuel Adler leaves the country – his mother, having lost her husband and fearing for her child, sends her son with other Jewish children to the relative safety of England. He will never see his family again. All that is left for the fragile and desperate Samuel is music, in which the boy hides from loneliness and insatiable grief. And also a family of Quakers who take him under their wing. Arizona, 2019. Seven-year-old Anita Diaz and her mother flee El Salvador, and after crossing the border into the United States, they are separated. Will they see each other again is a big question. All that is left for the blind and confused Anita is the imaginary country of Asabaar, where the girl hides from loneliness and a cruel, incomprehensible world. And the support of one ambitious lawyer and one passionate social worker who undertake to find Anita's missing mother.

Eight decades separate these events and these children. Two people looking for a family and a home. Both have almost lost hope. However, life will bring Samuel and Anita together and give them a second chance, because there will be people nearby who care.
