Before a storm, everything freezes: nature, pets, people—the air is filled with silence, concealing an inner tension that is about to be resolved.

In her novel, Selva Almada examines all its facets, moving from a vague but anxious premonition of the storm to the unbridled triumph of the elements. Her characters—a preacher driving through the Argentine countryside with his teenage daughter, and a brutal auto repair shop owner whose assistant, an orphan boy, is so inspired by the preacher's speeches—are also subject to the laws of nature. Their relationship is heading toward an inevitable denouement. The wind sweeps away much, but Almada promises no cleansing after the storm. Her book leaves behind mountains, sun, squat trees, long-broken cars, sweat-soaked shirts, and lonely lives.
