The death of Alya's father changed her mother and both grandmothers. Her mother has withdrawn from the world, her grandmother Iza is overprotective of Alya, and her grandmother Taya has no contact with her granddaughter. After her second year of university, Alya travels to the village on the Pinega River, where her grandmother Taya lives and where her father died many years ago. Alya tries to understand what happened to her family then and why a strange old woman neighbor believes Alya can save her from the creature that inhabited her body as a child.

Tina is a graduate student in the Faculty of Philology and writing a dissertation on a mythical creature that possesses women living in villages in northern Russia along the Pinega River. Tina immerses herself in the dark history and mythology of the Pinega region, while simultaneously enduring a painful relationship with her married supervisor, rarely leaving her rented studio on the outskirts of St. Petersburg.
