The first complete publication of Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich's diaries for the years 1870–1877 continues the series of publications of his diaries begun by the State Archives of the Russian Federation. The publication of two volumes, covering the years 1889–1894, was timed to coincide with the 300th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The first volume of this edition includes the Grand Duke's diaries for the years 1870–1876, tracing the key stages of his development: from an eleven-year-old boy raised at home under the care of nannies and a tutor to an independent nineteen-year-old man, who had gained experience on a long voyage to America and in naval service. This is an important yet challenging phase of personal development: during this time, the adolescent undergoes a physiological and psychological transformation, developing his outlook on life, his views on his purpose, his moral ideals, and his worldview. The diary gradually reveals the inner world of a man with a refined poetic soul, creative and romantic, honest with himself and others, with lofty aspirations and emotional torments. The diaries also offer insight into the Grand Duke's educational system, conceived by his parents, which defined his future academic and creative interests and instilled a lifelong love of art and history, literature, and music.

The second volume of this edition includes diaries for 1877, a year filled with important events in the Grand Duke's life. He spent that year in America, where he served on the frigate Svetlana with the rank of midshipman. Meeting members of the American aristocracy, visiting New York and Washington, participating in protocol events, and the inauguration of the new President of the United States, Robert Hayes, filled the Grand Duke's life from January to April 1877. In America, he received the news of the outbreak of the Russo-Turkish War. He fervently dreamed of serving on the Balkan front as part of the Guards Crew, and his dream came true. In July, Konstantin Konstantinovich arrived at a military camp in the small Romanian village of Slobozia, and on October 3, he participated in an operation on the Danube, for which he—a nineteen-year-old youth—was awarded the Order of St. George, 4th Class. In December 1877, the Grand Duke returned to St. Petersburg to begin, as he himself wrote, "a life worthy of the saint whose cross I wear on my chest, worthy of my homeland and my parents."
