Bulychev wrote about the Great Guslyar for several decades. The changes that occurred during this time in the life of both the author himself and the entire country could not help but be reflected in the Guslyar stories. The subject matter of Bulychev's stories and his understanding of fantasy itself underwent changes. The first volume of the collected works about the Great Guslyar included sixty stories and three novellas by Bulychev. The second volume of works about the Great Guslyar included forty-two stories and four novellas by Bulychev.
The texts of the collection are illustrated by three Soviet and Russian artists. Evgeny Tikhonovich Migunov (1921–2004) is an outstanding cartoonist and master of book graphics; He often collaborated with science fiction writers. He depicted Bulychev's characters for over forty years. Kira Alekseyevna Soshinskaya (1933–2022) was an architect by education, a writer, and the wife of Kir Bulychev. Viktor Mikhailovich Mineev was a talented artist who designed various magazines and illustrated many works of world literature.
