In his book, Don Wyeth turns to a previously unexplored history of Chinese encounters with dark-skinned peoples. The earliest and most frequent contacts were with Southeast Asians, particularly the Malays, followed by Africans. According to the conventional wisdom, this occurred in the 15th century during the Chinese sea voyages along the coast of Africa. However, Wyeth hypothesizes that the Chinese interacted with people from what is now Somalia, Kenya, and Tanzania many centuries earlier; in fact, blacks in China often found themselves in slavery.

Don Wyeth is a professor emeritus at Middlebury College. His research focuses on China, covering premodern Chinese thought, war and violence, and ethnicity and slavery.
