Why did people travel? The first Russian travelers traveled for religious reasons, visiting holy sites, or for trade. Gradually, geopolitical objectives began to be added to these interests: in the 16th and 17th centuries, Russian explorers set out beyond the Urals, discovering new lands in small groups, mapping them, and establishing Russian settlements and forts there. A century later, the government began equipping expeditions, which included scientists, naturalists, and geographers. What followed was the systematic scientific study and description of flora and fauna, natural resources, and unfamiliar peoples, cultures, and civilizations. The names of renowned Russian explorers and explorers Afanasy Nikitin, Fedot Kotov, Semyon Dezhnev, Yerofey Khabarov, Vladimir Atlasov, Vitus Bering, Gavriil Sarychev, Ivan Kruzenshtern, Vasily Golovnin, Fyodor Bellingshausen, Mikhail Lazarev, Nikolay Miklouho-Maclay, and many others are inscribed in gold letters in the global annals of great geographical discoveries. Thanks to the efforts of these courageous heroes, the Russian Empire expanded and gained power. In the first half of the 19th century, Russian exploratory expeditions were more numerous than those of France and Great Britain combined. And each expedition yielded unique discoveries of global significance.
