"Barabbas: A Dream of the Tragedy of the World" is a novel by Marie Corelli, first published in 1893. The story is a fictional account of the life of Barabbas, a notorious criminal freed by the people in place of Jesus Christ during his trial before Pontius Pilate. Through Barabbas, Marie Corelli reveals the spiritual transformation of a sinful soul, which, through contact with the Divine, comes to repentance, inner purification, and rebirth. The novel encourages reflection on the nature of sin, forgiveness, and eternal values, emphasizing the relevance of the Gospel story even after a thousand years. Corelli's vivid descriptions and poetic language create a surreal and otherworldly atmosphere.

This work is part of Marie Corelli's "Religious Trilogy," which consists of "Barabbas," "The Sorrows of Satan," and "The Christian Master."

Marie Corelli (1855–1924) was one of the best-selling British writers of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. Corelli's success was so enormous that she was the only writer invited to the coronation of Edward VII.

Corelli was a very eccentric woman. For example, she brought a gondola named "The Dream" (complete with gondolier) from Venice to cruise the River Avon. Before adopting this mode of transport, she traveled around the city in a phaeton pulled by a pair of Shetland ponies, Puck and Ariel.

She confounded critics and self-proclaimed heavyweight writers, but she engaged the average reader with the big, complex questions she posed in her books.
