Fifteen-year-old Cassie grew up in Leiden, a beautiful Dutch city with a rich history, but her mother needed to move to an unassuming town in the east of the country. She misses her old life and has to work part-time at the local supermarket to escape to the big city to see her friends. One sweltering Saturday evening she is riding her bike home from work. On her way, she is caught in a thunderstorm and has a dangerous accident, followed by a series of events that turn Cassie's world upside down and encourage her to "set a course to become an adult." In the plot of a dynamically unfolding novel of growing up by contemporary Dutch writer Martine Glaser is woven into the thread of a long mysterious history, giving the tense narrative an additional spice. The solution to the dramatic mystery will be found, but is that really the point...?
