Olga Breininger was born in Kazakhstan in 1987. She graduated from the A.M. Gorky Literary Institute and received a master's degree from Oxford University. She lives in Boston, USA, where she is working on her doctoral dissertation and teaching at Harvard University. She has published in the journals Oktyabr, Druzhba Narodov, and Novoye Literary Obozreniye. Her debut novel, "There Was No Adderall in the Soviet Union," sparked heated debate and was longlisted for the National Bestseller and Big Book awards.

The novel's heroine, a young woman of Soviet descent and a Harvard doctoral student, participates in the "experiment of the century" in personality programming. An ideal candidate for the experiment, an ethnic German woman uprooted from her native Kazakhstan in the 1990s, she swept through Europe, America, and Chechnya in search of a home, achieved career success, but lost her identity in the turmoil. Tomorrow, she will be presented to the world as a "superhuman," but today she recalls her past and thinks about others like her—young people broken by globalization and infinitely lonely, for whom the possible knows no bounds and who have nothing to lose.
