In the early years of World War II, Corporal Felix Hartlaub served in a barrier battalion in the Ruhr area. During the occupation of Paris, he worked for the Foreign Affairs Archives Commission and then ended up at Hitler’s headquarters. Here, in a secret area guarded from the rest of the world, Hartlaub kept an official war diary and secretly recorded his personal observations of the daily life of the Führer’s General Staff in his diary. His accounts provide an unexpected perspective on events, presenting a picture of the conduct of total war from Hitler’s secret headquarters. In May 1945, when keeping a war diary had become pointless, the corporal was sent to an infantry regiment to fight in the Battle of Berlin, but went missing en route. The diary was published by the author’s family in 1955.
