St. Petersburg in the 1840s. Young orphan writer Ivan Petrovich struggles to find his place in life and, while searching for a place to live, encounters numerous human tragedies and suffering.

This is Dostoevsky's first serious artistic exploration of poverty, injustice, and betrayal, having just returned from exile.

In "The Insulted and the Humiliated," the author presents characters who find themselves in dire straits and attempts to uncover the underlying causes of their condition.

His exploration of human psychology led him to the idea that egoism can be not only "predatory" and cynical (as in the case of Prince Valkonsky, an intriguer with a dark past), but also "sacrificial" (in the case of Natasha Ikhmeneva, blinded by love) and even "suffering" (as in the case of her proud father, Nikolai Ikhmenev).
