Issa was one of the first to depart from the traditional canons of Japanese poetry, infusing his poems with his personal observations and feelings. His primary goal was always to capture the surrounding reality with utmost precision and find beauty in the familiar and ordinary, usually completely ignored by his predecessors. And because Issa also wrote about his own experiences, his lines allow us not only to see the beauty of the world but also to discern the person hidden behind the three-line verses.

This edition includes Issa's best haiku, as well as excerpts from his prose book "My Spring" and his diary "Father's Last Days"—touching and poignant chronicles of Issa's care for his dying, gravely ill father.
