Mom, I'm going to school tomorrow! Did you buy me a satchel? It turns out that in pre-revolutionary Russia, children also went to school with satchels. Sometimes, though, they carried their textbooks in straps. And schools in Russia were very different: rural, gymnasiums, boarding schools, cadet corps, and even institutes of noble maidens. Russian writers could not help but describe their school experiences. Many things were different then: classes began with a prayer service, the students were looked after by class wardens and ladies, and grades were given by a 3- or 12-point system. But at all times schoolchildren were interested in the same thing. What's the new girl in class? How to fight back a bully classmate? And why does time at some lessons drag on endlessly, and at others - flies by unnoticed?
