The history of the Tretyakov Gallery began more than 150 years ago. In May 1856, a young Moscow merchant Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov purchased the first paintings for his collection, setting out to create Russia's first publicly accessible museum of domestic art. Since then, the collection has been steadily growing and replenishing.
Today the gallery's collection includes more than 170,000 works and is divided into several sections: Old Russian art, paintings, graphics and sculpture of the XVIII-XXI centuries, collections of art frames, furniture, decorative and applied art, a section of modern objects and installations. The uniqueness of the museum lies in the fact that for the first time in many decades of museum development in Russia the panorama of Russian culture from the XI to the XXI century is presented with exhaustive completeness in its halls.
