The history of the Tretyakov Gallery began more than 150 years ago. In May 1856, a young Moscow merchant Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov purchased the first paintings for his collection, setting out to create Russia's first publicly accessible museum of domestic art. Since then, the collection has been steadily growing and replenishing.
Today the gallery's collection includes more than 170,000 works and is divided into several sections: Old Russian art, paintings, graphics and sculpture of the XVIII-XXI centuries, collections of art frames, furniture, decorative and applied art, a section of modern objects and installations. The uniqueness of the museum lies in the fact that for the first time in many decades of museum development in Russia the panorama of Russian culture from the XI to the XXI century is presented with exhaustive completeness in its halls. The album introduces the masterpieces of Russian painting, stored today in the walls of the famous mansion in the center of Moscow. Here are icons by Theophanes the Greek and Andrei Rublev, paintings by Borovikovsky, Bryullov, Ivanov, Aivazovsky, Ge, Savrasov, Kramsky, Repin, Vasnetsov, Surikov, Polenov, Shishkin, Levitan, Serov and Vrubel. The album also presents artists whose works are kept in the halls of the Krymsky Val: Larionov, Goncharova, Petrov-Vodkin, Malevich, Kandinsky, Konchalovsky, Shagal, Deineka, Kabakov. All this creates a broad panorama of the development of Russian painting. The book opens with a sketch of the history of the Tretyakov Gallery. Each section is preceded by an introductory article giving a brief but exhaustive characterization of the development of painting in a particular historical period. This album is the best gift for anyone interested in art.
