Bruno Bear in the Garden continues the series of informative picture books created by the famous Swedish writer and illustrator Gunilla Ingves. The book includes two stories: "Bruno Bear and the Rainworm Uffe" and "Bruno Bear and the Grasshopper Tippe". In the first story, Bruno Bear walks through the garden and notices a strange pile of earth on a bed of radishes. Pulling it away with his paw, he sees an underground passage. I wish I could get into it! The inquisitive bear can become small when he wants to. How? That's his secret! When he becomes a teddy bear, he rolls under the ground and falls right on top of Uffe, the earthworm. When Uffe recovers from the shock, he shows the teddy bear his domain and introduces him to his legworm friends. The teddy bear saves the worm from a ferocious millipede and helps him to replenish his food supply. The teddy bear then carefully records his observations in his diary. Bear's notes and drawings take up four pages: the underground possessions of Uffe in section, the lifestyle of earthworms, their body structure and method of reproduction, their friends and enemies, and the benefits they bring to the garden. In the second story, Bruno the bear and Lolla the dog are sitting in the garden listening to the grasshoppers chirping. The bear is very curious about how they make such music. He becomes the size of a grasshopper and meets Tippet. He shows Tippet how they chirp and together they go off to find Tippet a bride. At full speed the friends crash into a sticky web and are about to fall prey to a poisonous spider. But then Lolla arrives and tears the web apart. The day ends with a merry wedding in Bruno Bear's garden. Then the bear writes down in his diary everything he has seen and learned during the walk. Four pages are peppered with his notes and drawings about the family of green grasses to which Tippet belongs - their way of life, breeding, friends and enemies. With gentle illustrations, lots of detail on every page, and charming characters, Bruno Bear books teach children ages 3-6 to understand nature.
